Born in 1935, Sheffield is a very prolific science fiction writer. Citing Larry Niven's Ringworld as inspiration, he didn't start writing until his forties. With stories appearing in Galaxy and Analog, he began to write novels as well. Using his background as a physicist, (he worked on the Apollo moon missions) his books are usually very realistic, textbook examples of hard science fiction. Some of his best known works are the The Web Between the Worlds and the Proteus books.
