Jurgis Kairys is a famous Lithuanian acrobatic flying pilot. He was born on 6th of May, 1953 in Sharipov village, Krasnoyarsk area where his parents have been deported by the Soviet government. He started flying in 1974 and has been a member of Soviet acrobatic flying team in 1978-1989. He became European champion in 1981 for the first time and in 1982 he got his first gold medal in the World championship. Many more medals and awards followed.
Jurgis Kairys became acrobatic flying champion of USA in 1989, South African champion in 1992, he won "fond du Lac" cup in 1993. Needless to say, he was Lithuanian acrobatic flying champion for numerous years.
One of his greatest achievements was becoming "grand prix" world champion in Japan, 2000.
Despite of all these achievements, Jurgis Kairys is most famous in Lithuania for flying under bridges. On July 6th, 1996 he flew under Kaunas' Nemunas island bridge wihch is only 6 metres high measuring from the surface of the water. In 1997, while a crowd of thousands of people watched, he flew under the White Bridge in Vilnius.
On September 18th, 1999 he flew under all 10 Vilnius' bridges in less than an hour. He made a final flight under Kaunas' Nemunas island bridge on September 2nd, 2000, this time flying upside down.
