After the debacle with Denver four years earlier, United States finally got
the games organized; Lake Placid for the second time.
American Eric Heiden wins five gold medals in speed skating, but the
perhaps biggest sensation was when the American ice hockey team amazingly
beats the Soviet Union and goes on to win the tournament. Alpine skiers Ingemar
Stenmark and Hanni Wenzel both won 2 gold medals each.
