Literally
translated, "the Lord wept". Also the name of a tiny
church on the
Mount of Olives across the
Kidron Valley from the old city of
Jerusalem. According to
tradition, it is built where
Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem as recorded in
Luke 19: 37-42. In reality, that may not be the exact location, but it is very similar to the likely spot.
Another, less verifiable tradition is that the prophet Jeremiah composed his Lamentations in the same location.
The building itself is a small, handsome structure of light stone. Behind the altar is an attractive arched window overlooking the valley below. Outside, small finials resemble tears. There is a small garden and a landing from which one can see the Eastern gate to Old Jerusalem. It is a short walk to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations.
