Pope, served from 625 until his death in 638 CE. Was interested in conversion of the
Anglo-Saxons and
Celtics to
Christianity. He was a shrewd and able administrator. Wrote a letter seemingly in support of
Monothelitism for which he was posthumously declared a
heretic at the Third Council of
Constantinople at 680 CE. Modern
Roman Catholic scholars contend he was not in favor of the
heresy, but merely used ambigious language.
