San Francisco
amusement park from 1928-1972. Playland at the Beach was located in the
Sunset neighborhood on the west side of
San Francisco, right off of
Ocean Beach. A favorite of locals and tourists alike, Playland at the Beach was the original home of many surviving SF landmarks, such as the
Musee Mecanique (now located at
Fisherman's Wharf), the
Carousel (now at the San Francisco children's museum,
Zeum) and
It's-It ice cream bar. The
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, still operational in
Santa Cruz,
California, is a very similar amusement park.
A large apartment complex now stands on the former grounds of Playland at the Beach.
