Possibly the most famous
pirate radio station in the world.
Caroline was named after Caroline Kennedy, daughter of then US President John F. Kennedy.
The station began broadcasting from the North Sea at Easter 1967. Caroline brought pop music radio to the UK at a time when conventional radio virtually ignored 'happening' new bands. It proved the catalyst that forced the BBC to create Radio 1.
Nowadays Caroline is a shadow of her former self, reduced to broadcasting via obscure satellite audio-subcarriers and occasional low-power temporary licences, but at least she's still alive.
