A
Sergeant First Class (also known as a
Platoon Sergeant), is the third highest rank in the United States Army, an
E7. This type of
sergeant generally has several
staff sergeants working under his direct leadership. He is a key advisor and assistant to the
platoon leader. A Sergeant First Class usually also has 15 to 18 years of military experience under his belt. It is expected of him to act like a leader, even more than the sergeants below him.
