The
Western Collegiate Hockey Association,
WCHA, is a
NCAA Div. I hockey conference. It was founded in
1951 as the
Midwest Intercollegiate Hockey League. In
1953 it became the
Western Intercollegiate Hockey League. Finally in
1959 the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association. It sponsors
hockey games between member institutions to determine a conference champion that will compete in the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship. To determine the conference champ they hold a conference tournament. In this conference playoff championship the top five teams of the league play to determine a clear cut winner.
