YiPL, or The Youth International Party Line, is widely regarded as the first periodical devoted to fone
phreaking.
Xeroxed and hand-written by
Abbie Hoffman, it was mostly devoted to such low-tech fone scams as
carding and
social engineering, but also included plans for early
boxes as well. Later on, it was taken up by other hands, renamed
TAP, or Technical Assistance Program, and as such, ran well into the
1980's.
Hoffman's interest in telephony was due to a special tax on long-distance calls that went directly to the DoD. By evading long-distance calling charges, Yippies and their friends could a) avoid paying this tax, b) stick it to corporate America, and c) create a moving, mobile base of operations by using pay fones that couldn't be traced by the FBI.
