This is an
analysis of the
lyrics of
hot cha, a
song by
They Might Be Giants from their
1990 album,
Flood.
Introduction: The seemingly innocuous song
hot cha by
They Might Be Giants is in fact an ironic look at the birth of
Christianity in terms of the life of
Jesus Christ.
Hot Cha, where are you?
Everybody's eyes are closed
I can't see why I miss you so
So Hot Cha, where are you?
This verse is asking where
Jesus is, and wondering why everybody's eyes are closed to Him.
First time Hot Cha went away
A floating island was his home
Then the phone rang off the hook
And Hot Cha had to come back home
This refers to the first time that
Jesus left his
Apostles during his travel to the desert for 40 days. It is speculated that during these 40 days He visited
god in
heaven (i.e. floating island).
Jesus then returned because humankind had not yet been absolved of their sins.
Hot Cha, where are you?
Everybody's eyes are closed
I can't see why I miss you so
So Hot Cha, where are you?
Same as first verse.
Second time he went away
Left the bathtub running over
Stereo on and cooking bacon
Never came back to tell us why
This refers to the
ascension of
Jesus into
heaven. He left quite suddenly with things seemingly left undone; only later did people realize why
Jesus left.
If that honey would come back
We would throw such a party
Drink and cook the prodigal son
Fondue forks for everybody
It shows the ironic and superficial way people look at
Jesus now, as an excuse to have a party. See
Christmas. Also refers to the
prodigal son, a
biblical story.
Hot Cha, where are you?
Everybody's eyes are closed
I can't see why I miss you so
So Hot Cha, where are you?
Hot Cha, where are you?
Hot Cha, where are you?
Same as first verse.
