media whore

Inadvertently coined by a writer for the Village Voice some years ago, in reference to Al Sharpton; it refers to someone who can't get enough of the cameras and microphones of the news media - the better to engage oneself in shameless self-promotion. Actors do this kind of thing to promote their film or TV show, and spin doctors do it on those talking-head shows, often in direct proportion to the lameness of the product they're promoting.

Media Whore is a term used to describe a person who promotes themselves through vigorous use of any available outlets, often with a blatant disregard for other peoples efforts.

Examples can bee seen on TV and the silver screen; TV being a more immediate venue for the media whore, as are other live or near live broadcastmediums.

The phrase is mentioned in the Smiths song Paint A Vulgar Picture, it is also the name of a band.
