Some people wonder about the numbers attached to the different games in the Final Fantasy series. To people who don't know much about the Japanese gaming market it looks as though the series jumped from III to VII. Here's why it looks that way:
- Final Fantasy I - This is the game that started the series, released in both Japanese and English for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
- Final Fantasy II - Also known as IIj, this game was never officially released in English, but was made for the Famicom (FAMIly COMputer, the Japanese name for the NES).
- Final Fantasy III - Also known as IIIj, this game was never offically released in English either. Again it was made for the Famicom.
- Final Fantasy IV - This was known in North America as Final Fantasy II, and was the first Final Fantasy game to be released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and the Super Famicom
- Final Fantasy V - Also known as Vj, this was originaly released only for the Super Famicom, but is now available for the Playstation in Final Fantasy Anthology
- Final Fantasy VI - This was released in English as Final Fantasy III. It's also available on the Playstation's Final Fantasy Anthology
- Final Fantasy VII - The first of the series to be released on the Sony Playstation. It was released in Japanese and English
- Final Fantasy VIII - Released in both English and Japanese for the Playstation.
- Final Fantasy IX - Released in both English and Japanese, and was that last in the series released for the Playstation.
- Final Fantasy X - Released in both English and Japanese and was the first FF title to be released for the Playstation 2.
Hopefully this will clear up any confusion.
