At 16 he
published his first
book of
verse and at 18 his first play, The
Death of
Titian (1892, tr. 1913) when he was 18. He is most famous for his librettos for the operas of
Richard Strauss, which include:
After World War I he was active in the formation of the
Salzburg Festival, where his play Der Turm (1925) and his adaptation of
Everyman (JederMann; 1911, tr. 1917), are regularly produced.
