An electronic device used in computer networking which determines the next network point to which a data
packet should be forwarded toward its destination, in a process known as
routing.
Routing takes place in
layer 3 of the
OSI seven layer model. Routing is most commonly associated with the
IP protocol, but is still in use with other protocols such as
IPX.
Also, a
power tool commonly used in
woodworking to
rout--or cut groves in wood or other materials including plastic or metal.
