Anishnabwe (pron. a-NISH-na-BWay) - now a generic term used among
Native Canadians to denote a person of
Native heritage in
Ontario or
Quebec. Previously used by the
Ojibway exclusively, it now includes
Cree and
Iroquois tribes, due to the forced
amalgamation of
tribes by the
Canadian and American governments during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. See
métis, and other nodes on
Native North Americans.
Nowadays, native people call each other "Nish". But if you're not native, and you say that word to a native person, they will be extremely offended.
