A sign saying "He Hudas not pay" can be seen in many
jeepneys around the
Philippines. It is a play of words between the phrase "he who does not pay" and the word "Hudas" which means
Judas in Filipino.
Whenever I see this sign, I am transfixed. The message is clear, the person who does not pay the driver is likened to Judas. And in a way, the phrase is indeed witty and funny. And yet it is awkward.
I spend the rest of the trip trying to figure out why I feel I have to correct its grammar.
