Ernest Hemingway lived in
Key West in the 20's and 30's.
The house he lived in is now a
museum called the Hemingway House. There are about 50 named
cats now living at the Hemingway House, and many of the cats have
six toes on each
paw. These cats are
polydactyl.
According to
legend,
sailors thought of cats with six toes as
good luck and Hemingway was given one of these cats by a sea
captain. The cats living at the Hemingway abode now are the six-toed descendants of Hemingway's cat.
