Older brother of the more renowned Bonaparte,
Napoleon. Born on January 1
1786 in
Corsica. He studied
law in
Paris and married Julie Clary in
1794, a union which
produced
offspring in the form of two girls, Zénaïde and Charlotte
Bonaparte.
Served as envoy and diplomat for his brother during the Italian
campaign. In 1806 he was made King of Naples (as Joseph Napoleon
I), a title which he
held until he became King of Spain in 1808. In 1813, during the
peninsular war, he was forced to leave Spain and withdrew to
France. After Napoleon final defeat in 1815 he emmigrated to the
United States, where he stayed until 1832. After a brief stay in
England, he settled in Italy. He died on July 28 1844 in
Florence.
