I was browsing through my dictionary last night looking for
English words that didn't come from
Latin,
French or
German and came across three beauties:
Each of which come from a different
Old Norse word essentially meaning
shit! What a fabulous language English is!
In case you hadn't noticed, consecutive invasions of
the British Isles brought new words into the
English Language. Generally, the new words were used by the new ruling class, and
life went on as normal for the peasants. These lovely
Viking remnants have survived more than
a thousand of years of shit-shovelling.
Can you believe I actually made it from
D to
M in one night? That was some strong coffee...!
