Creatures found in several of Squaresoft's Final Fantasy titles, but given great importance in Final Fantasy X. (Pronounced AAY-on.) Called "Summons" in some earlier FF titles.
Aeons are physical incarnations of spiritual beings called Fayths. Once humans themselves, the Fayths sacrificed their lives to become ethereal beings who, when called upon by Summoners, can manifest themselves as humongous (often terrifying) creatures. Once they take physical form, Aeons fight in the Summoner's stead, protecting him/her from whatever aggressor might be trying to kill, maim, mutilate, tickle, or otherwise annoy said Summoner.
Each Aeon has a special power, or overdrive ability.
The Aeons in Final Fantasy X are:
- Valefor: A large flyer; appears to be a cross between a bird and a dragon. Found at the Temple of the Fayth in Besaid, Valefor is the first Aeon you get to control in FFX. He has two overdrives: Energy Ray and Energy Blast.
- Ifrit: A fire demon from Kilika Temple. His overdrive is called Hellfire.
- Ixion: An unicorn with all sorts of cool lightning powers. He is found at Djose Temple and his overdrive is Thor's Hammer.
- Shiva: An ice princess (but in a good way). From Macalania Temple, Shiva controls the forces of the blizzard; her overdrive is Diamond Dust.
- Bahamut: The most powerful of the standard Aeons; unlike his peers, he can do more than 9999 damage in one hit. Bahamut is found at the Palace of Saint Bevelle. His overdrive is Mega Flare.
- Yojimbo: An odd Aeon, indeed. A samurai mercenary, he requires you to pay him each time he is summoned and he often allows his companion (a large dog) do the attacking for him. Found in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth (in the Calm Lands), he is the first of the hidden Aeons. Yojimbo does not appear to have an overdrive, per se, but he does have several unique attacks--Daigoro, Kozuka, Wakizashi, and Zanmato--each of which do quite a bit of damage.
- Anima: The second hidden Aeon is the incarnation of Seymour Guado's mother, Anima (aka "The Dark Aeon"). Anima is a sight that almost defies description. Chained to the ground (ostensibly because even the Summoner has trouble controlling him), Anima appears to be part piranha, part skeleton, and part freaky, evil, spooky thing. Anima's overdrive, Oblivion, is the most powerful attack in the game. Anima is located in Baaj Temple.
- The Magus Sisters: A holdover from several previous Final Fantasy games, the Magus Sisters, Cindy, Sandy, and Mindy can fight separately or in tandem. Their overdrive, which uses all three of their combined powers, is called Delta Attack and is quite powerful. They divine their powers from three individual fayth who reside in Remiem Temple.
