The highway is littered with old condoms and dreams
Johnny and me we been walking for days
eating cigarette butts smoking candy bar wrappers
sleeping like crows between poles on a line
when they blink Johnny says that’s always a sign
black crow blinks harvest will shrink
crow’s eye is steady harvest is heavy
but Johnny he says things like that all the time
we been walking this road since Jesus was born
old army jackets and rocks for a pillow
and sometimes at night when it’s cold I start thinking
that somehow my life should’ve turned out different
like all the motels that I've passed should be free
and mermaids should come with the cable TV
Johnny picks up a stick and pokes at a snake
dead snake on the road that's a sign Johnny says
but the highway is littered with old men’s dreams
the sun was shining the day Jesus died
and Johnny he says things like that all the time.
