In a theatre, a wash is a general cover of light in a specific
colour. For example, a
lighting rig may consist of two or three different
colour washes, plus a few
specials.
Normally, the two main washes are a
warm (orange or straw) and a
cold (blue) wash. These can create very different feels for a
scene.
