Lyrics brought to you by Segnbora-t
Christmas carol/
hymn, originally
Sicilian, according to my songbook. Numerous English versions of the words exist. A
Latin hymn of the same title exists but the English words don't seem to be a translation of the Latin.
English version 1:
O thou joyful day, O thou blessed day,
Holy, peaceful Christmas tide.
Earth's hopes awaken, Christ life hath taken.
Laud Him, O laud Him on ev'ry side.
O thou joyful day, O thou blessed day,
Holy, peaceful Christmas tide.
King of glory, We bow before Thee,
Laud Him, O laud Him on ev'ry side.
English version 2:
O beneficient,
O thou heavenly,
Hallowed, grace bringing Christmastide!
Lost was each nation,
Christ brings salvation,
Hail it, Christendom, far and wide.
Lost was each nation,
Christ brings salvation,
Hail it, Christendom, far and wide.
Latin words:
O sanctissima, O piissima,
Dulcis Virgo, Maria!
Mater amata, Intemerata,
Ora, Ora pro nobis!
Virgo, respice, Mater, aspice,
Audi nos, O Maria!
Tu medicinam Portas divinam,
Ora, Ora pro nobis!
