Sohn-Rethel attempted to adapt categories from Karl Marx' critique of political economy to problems in the cognitive theory of Neomarxism. As a sociologist, he worked on the character and evolution of work.
Among his books are Geistige und körperliche Arbeit (1970), Warenform und Denkform (1971), and Ökonomie und Klassenstruktur des Deutsches Faschismus (1973).
