Vytautas Landsbergis, born in Kaunas, Lithuania in October 18, 1932, is a Lithuanian politician. He holds a Ph.D in music from the year 1968 and specializes on the works of Lithuanian composer Čiurlionis. Landsbergis is an author of 10 books about music.
Vytautas Landsbergis began his political career in 1988 as one of the founders of Sąjūdis, a political movement that began the campaign for Lithuanian independence from Soviet Union. After Sąjūdis winning the election of the year 1990, V.Landsbergis became the chairman of Lithuanian Supreme Council (the position, that was equivalent to the president at the time). He held this position from March 1990 to November 1992, during which Lithuania gained its independence.
In 1993, Landsbergis founded a political party Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives), which won the parliamentary elections in 1996 and V.Landsbergis served as a parliament speaker from 1996 to 2000. In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament as a Lithuanian representative.
